How can you tell if a soother clip is safe:
In the EU, all soother clips must follow strict safety requirements in how they are made and materials used need to be subjected to tests . These standards have been formulated to inform suppliers on how to safely create a soother clip, and what it takes materials used to successfully pass laboratory testing.
A soother clip can not contain plastic beads, any diamonds of any sort or embellishments on them.
Length: All soother clips must not exceed a maximum length from the base of the clip to the end of the loop & the loop cannot be longer than 5cm. If a soother clip exceeds this length, it is a strangulation hazard to your child.
Strength: The cord has to be a minimum width and must take the weight of 10kg without snapping. Anything thinner than the required width would make the soother clip weak and easy to break, posing a choking hazzard.
Impact Resistance: Soother clips have to pass strict impact resistance tests on each component of the clip. No printed design beads can be used as these are water dipped printing and would not pass chemical testing.
Ventilation holes: All fasteners on soother clips must have at least two 4mm ventilation holes present.
Safety beads: At the end of all our soother clips, we have either a beech wood bead or our cord is wrapped around the silicone bead to prevent the beads from slipping off. It may not seem it, but silicone beads are extremely flexible, and if you tug hard enough, it can easily slip over any knot so wrapping the cord around the bead is an essential safety measure. No metal beads are allowed on soother clips.
Labelling: All soother clips must come packaged with specific warnings and care instructions that have been published on the EN 12586:2007+A1:2011.
If you suspect any soother clip on the market to not adhere to these EU Safety requirements or find an unsafe product you can report it to CCPC - Consumer Protection.
My Little Galway Store offers a range of soother clips that comply with the EU Safety requirements and Test Methods EN 12586:2007+A1:2011.
